Piano By Pattern is a very good piano teaching course, that easily landed in our top rated list immediately after Worthy’s courses and Rocket Piano.
The course is based on a 9 lesson video package: The videos can be either played online, by clicking control buttons (Play, Pause, Fast Forward and Rewind) in the members area of the website, or downloaded to your computer for offline use. When chords are played, a piano keyboard is displayed on-screen, in which the keys light up when they are pressed. This makes it very easy to follow the playing, and visualize the chords. In addition, the instructor uses a cursor to emphasize and highlight the points to which you should pay extra attention.
The is very effective for beginners, and does a commendable job in bringing them to intermediate level.
The “Secret Patterns” technique underlying this course provides results fast, and is fun to use. It is not, however, unique to this course, as all three of Worthy’s courses and Rocket Piano all utilize piano patterns. That being said, Piano By Pattern does a first rate job in teaching how to play by ear, and also includes resources for teaching how to read music.
Our experts consider videos a must have for courses of this type, and it’s a pity that few other courses provide them. The videos behind this course are what elevate it o our top five list, as they enable you to see the keys used “live”. Our only grumble is that they do not show how to place the hands, with actual shots of a pianist playing.
